Tenor Son Jihoon Wins
the 2022 Giovanni Battista
Viotti International Music Competition
Tenor Son Jihoon, an alumnus of the
School of Music, became the winner of the 2022 Giovanni Battista Viotti
International Music Competition that closed on 16 October. In the final round,
Son sang Gaetano Donizetti’s “The Daughter of the Regiment” and Gioachino
Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” earning an average score of 91.6 from the
jury. On this day, Son also enjoyed the pleasure of seizing the Audience Award
at the same time.
The Viotti Competition is a music
contest established in 1950 to commemorate the Italian composer-violinist
Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824). It runs competitions in piano and voice.
The previous 1st prize winners from Korea include pianist Lee Mi-joo, soprano
Jo Sumi, pianist Jung Eunju, pianist Son Yeol-eum, pianist Lim Hyo-sun, tenor
Hong Sung-hoon, tenor Lee Jaesik, and baritone Cho Chanhee.
