“Laon-pan”
by the School of Korean Traditional Arts, a Korean Traditional Play, Goes to the
Festivals in Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands
From 2 to 5 July in Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands,
the School of Korean Traditional Arts of K-Arts presented a traditional Korean theatrical
work, “Laon-pan,” composed of various musical genres such as samulnori (percussion performance), mask
dance, and others.
The title, “Laon-pan,” comes from a pure Korean word
meaning a “joyful stage,” which is consisted of samulnori, suljanggo, samulpan-gut,
Bongsan mask dance, Goseong mask dance, etc. The performers include the current
and graduate students of K-Arts led by professor Kim Won-min of the Department
of Korean Traditional Dramatic Performing Arts. Beginning from participating in
the Street Art Festival in Poland on 2 July, the performance went on at the Boiler
House in the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin on 5 July, at the jazz hall at the
Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, and at the Korea Culture Festival in Amsterdam,
the Netherlands on 8 July. In the meantime, each performance took place with the
cooperation of the local cultural centers and embassies.
Furthermore, upcoming 18 October, the School of Korean Traditional Arts will open an exchange workshop with the Cologne University of Music and Dance in Germany and have a concert tour in three cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Essen.
