Queer Artist Choi Haneyl Presents a Solo Exhibition, “Bulky”

Artist Choi Haneyl, who received the MFA in Fine Arts in the School of Visual Arts, opens a solo exhibition, “Bulky,” at the Arario Museum in Seoul until 6 March next year.

The exhibition displays Choi’s artworks in a daring and explicit form of queer art that integrates gay culture found in mundane life – which Choi represented as manual therapy, jiu-jitsu sparring, and indoor cycling – into the artist’s emotional imagination. Choi commented, “I found that the process I embody my works through sculpting was similar to how the gays bulk up their bodies through bodybuilding.” Choi Haneyl held several solo exhibitions in “Hapseongjigu” (2017) and “Sansu Munhwa” (2018).

He also participated in a number of group exhibitions arranged by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2019, Asia Culture Center in 2020, and Arko Art Center in 2021. In 2019, Choi published Robust Control/ Vanta Black, an anthology that collects his past exhibitions and artworks.
