School of Music Opens the Early Music Program ts
for the First Time in Korea
Since March 2021, the Department of Instrumental Music in the School of Music opened the Department of Ancient Wind and String Instruments for the first time in Korea.
It is a 3-year degree program, which offers majors in Baroque violin, Baroque viola, Baroque cello, viola da gamba, Baroque guitar – theorbo or lute - for the ancient string instruments. It also provides majors in recorder, traverso (Baroque flute), Baroque oboe, Baroque bassoon, natural horn, Baroque trumpet, Baroque trombone (sackbut) for the ancient wind instruments.
To
produce the experts with a profound understanding of ancient Western music, the
Department of Ancient Wind and String Instruments underwent a long preparation
period before establishment, referring to the education system in Europe. Now, the students, who study ancient musical
instruments in Korea, can choose their specializations in more diverse sections
for a Baroque orchestra beyond majors in recorder or harpsichord.
