Lee Dabin Wins the Best at the 24th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival with Narrative VR Game <Penpal Kitchen>

Lee Dabin, majoring in animation in the School of Film, TV & Multimedia, won both the best and second-best awards at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) X Unity Short Film Challenge with a narrative VR game <Penpal Kitchen.>

This festival was the first event BIFAN organized with a real-time graphics rendering engine company, Unity, to support the short-film productions. Director Lee was a participant in an art-technology convergence program of Content One Campus 2020 that makes XR animation built with game engines. Penpal Kitchen is a narrative VR game about cooking Korean food. The game guides a player to learn the Korean food recipe while playing. The jury commented, “The Penpal Kitchen’s level completion was excellent. Based on the VR engine, the work shows us bold and interesting storytelling that goes back and forth between the two formats – game and webtoon.

In particular, because the game efficiently utilizes the VR environment to construct the frames within webtoon, watching it was very amusing. The flow of switching from webtoon to game was not awkward at all.”
