Haneyl Choi Hosts Solo Exhibition "Siamese"
Haneyl Choi, a graduate
of the School of Visual Arts, presented the solo exhibition Siamese at P21 Itaewon from May through
June. In this exhibition, Choi re-interprets and introduces the modifications
of the works of Kim Jong Yung (1915-1982), a trailblazer of Korean abstract
sculpture. Kim becomes the object to be overcome and doubted for the future
generation of Korean sculptures. Choi’s version of Kim’s works looks the same
as the original from the front. It is, however, totally aberrant from the
original from the back that it rarely reminds of Kim Jong Yung to the viewers.
In that way, Choi’s work
brings Kim Jong Yung to justice. Haneyl Choi commented, “Through Siamese, I’m not trying to completely deny
Kim Jong Yung. Rather, I’m trying to speak up what I can tell as a sculptor
living in 2020.” He added, “I wonder about how I can combine the reality with
arts in my works. In general, I try to let my works reflect my rage and
interests on social issues.”
