School of Drama’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Named Top 50 Must-See in Avignon OFF

School of Drama’s 30th Anniversary Production, “Romeo and Juliet,” Listed on 50 Must-See Shows at Avignon Off

“Romeo and Juliet,” re-interpreted by professor Choe Junho (School of Drama, Department of Theatre Studies) and director Alain Timár, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the School of Drama, was listed on the “50 Must-See Shows at the 2024 Avignon Off” by Le Bruit de Off. This year at Avignon Off, 1,666 pieces were performed. The School of Dance showcased the production at the Theatre des Halles from 29 June to 21 July.

Set in Verona in the year 2100, the production adopts the Sci-fi form to explore the theme of love and relationship with wit. The work enjoyed great success, well-received by both local critics and the audience. Manuel Piolat Soleymat remarked in a column, “A Moment Korean Elsewhere Confronted Shakespeare,” in the journal “La Terrasse,” that 14 K-Arts performers with Alain Timár’s staging succeeded in making the audience immersed in the production through an undeniably beautiful representation of Shakespeare, a symbol of the purely West turned into the one with the East.

Sylvie Michel, an audience, said, “I greatly enjoyed both enlivened Shakespeare’s soul and the music and colors that are truly Korean. The actors and actresses’ energy was also amazing and beautiful. I’m grateful they’ve prepared such a great performance from afar.” Another audience who came with a daughter said, “Laughing and crying, I was completely indulged in the show.”
