Yoo Chaerin's 'A Pathetic Man' Nominated for Animafest Zagreb 2024

Yoo Chaerin, School of Film, TV & Multimedia, Goes to the 34th Animafest Zagreb at Invitation

“A Pathetic Man” (2024) by Yoo Chaerin (BA, 3rd year) majoring in Animation entered the Student Films Competition at the official invitation of the 34th Animafest Zagreb from 3 to 8 June. The Animafest Zagreb, a world festival of animated films, makes selections focusing more on the artistic than commercial quality of work. It is one of the 4 main animated film festivals in the world.

“A Pathetic Man” (2024) delicately depicts the emotions and psychology of young women who consume the displayed images of objectified men. Yoo created work in a workshop class of the Department of Animation in the School of Film, TV & Multimedia. On the accomplishment of her film, Yoo said, “When I got onto production shortly after coming up with the idea of ‘A Pathetic Man,’ I was assured I would have great fun from this project.” She added, “At the same time, however, I was still anxious and clouded by the sense of uncertainty. The invitation to Zagreb indeed gave me deep relief. I’m very satisfied with studying in my department. If you fulfill the department’s coursework, by the time you graduate you will have 4 pieces of production of your own.”

You Chaerin earned recognition as a creator beforehand with the success of her “My Father and Me” (2023, 2D digital, 3 mins), which entered the 2023 Bucheon International Animation Festival, the Korean Short Film Festival, and the 2023 Student World Impact Film Festival when she was only a freshman in the Department of Animation. It was also broadcast on SBS’s “Ani Gallery.”
