School of Korean Traditional Arts Dominates 44th Onnara Gukak Competition

13 School of Korean Traditional Arts Students Clinch Awards at the 44th Onnara Gugak Competition


 The students of the School of Korean Traditional Arts achieved excellence in the 44th Onnara Gugak Competition, obtaining 1 Best Award, 5 Gold, 4 Silver, and 3 Bronze, totaling up to 13 prizes. The Onnara Gugak Competition originated from the 1st National Gugak Competition in 1981. With its high status in the field, it has been a gateway for gugak prospects for the past 40 years.

 

In the contest, Yoon Gyeom (MA, graduate) took the Best Award and the Prime Minister Award in ajaeng. The Gold Medal winners were as follows in respective categories: Lim Jae-in (MA, graduate) in gayageum, Hwang Yeon-jeong (MA, graduate) in haegeum, and Cho Shin-yeong (MA, 2nd year) in pansori jangdan drumming. Furthermore, in gayageum, Jeong Jiho (BA, 4th year) took the Gold, Jeong Seowon (BA, 3rd year) the Silver, and Hwang Jinho (MA, graduate) the Bronze. In pansori singing with gayageum, Kim Dohyeon (BA, 2nd year) and Kim Jin-kyeong (BA, 4th year) won the Gold and Bronze, respectively. Lee Keon-jun (BA, 4th year) took Silver in daegeum while O Daeju (BA, 3rd year) and Kim Hyeon-seung (MA, graduate) took Silver and Bronze each in piri. Last but not least, Seo Minjae (BA, 2nd year) was the Silver winner in composition.

 

The 1st prize winner in each category of the competition is granted the Prime Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Award.
