Shin Dong-hyeon Wins the 33rd National Uruk Gayageum Competition in the College Student Category
Shin Dong-hyeon, a second-year student in the School of Korean Traditional Arts, became the winner in the college student category of the 33rd Goryeong National Uruk Gayageum Competition. The contest promotes Goryeong town, as the hometown of Uruk and the origin of gayageum. Uruk, one of the three musical virtuosos in Korean history, is credited with inventing the gayageum, a traditional Korean musical instrument featuring 12 silk strings.
Juror Park Hyun-suk mentioned, “It was a satisfactory event where the
overall competitors showed their proficiency in gayageum. Their playing suited
the contest’s prestige.”
The Goryeong National Uruk Gayageum Competition, initiated in 1991 to honor
Uruk and preserve the tradition of gugak, is the gayageum contest with the oldest
history and tradition in the country. It contributes to informing the excellence
of the traditional Korean culture and advancing the local arts and culture.
