Sungsic Exhibits in the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale
Moon Sungsic, a visual artist who obtained his BA and MA in Fine Arts at
the School of Visual Arts, participates in the Korean Pavilion of the 2024 Venice
Biennale. As the Korean Pavilion celebrates its 30th anniversary in
2025, it presents a special exhibit, “All Islands Are Mountains,” highlighting the
history of Korea’s visual art going through past, present, and future. Moon came
to the limelight at the 2005 Venice Biennale where he took part as the
youngest-ever artist of the Korean Pavilion.
Moon Sungsic ceaselessly seeks his original style in the most classic visual
art genre, painting. In his solo exhibition two years ago, Moon put on a display
of drawings completed by etching thick oil coatings with a pencil. This time,
he unveils for the first time the new works additionally containing silver foil.
The curator commented, “Moon Sungsic’s works have evolved from adopting the traditional
Korean style as in Gyeomjae Jeongseon’s paintings at the same time as employing
and re-interpreting the techniques of great Korean visual artists such as Park
Soo-keun’s matière or Lee Jung-seop’s silver foil drawing.”
