Arete Quartet Wins 6 Prizes at the CIMCL
Arete Quartet, all of whose members are alumni of the School of Music in K-Arts, won the 19th Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon (CIMCL). Formed in 2019, the Arete Quartet consists of Jeon Chaeann (1st violin), Park Eunjoong (2nd violin), Jang Yoonsun (viola), and Park Seonghyeon (cello). The group won the special prize for the best interpretation of Mozart’s work at the 2023 International Mozart Competition in Salzburg.
In the finals at the city hall of Lyon on 26 April,
the quartet together with violist Jean-Baptiste Magnon performed W.A. Mozart’s String
Quintet No.4 in G minor, K516, 1st movement and Alban Berg’s Lyric
Suite, with which they earned 6 prizes in total, the first and 5 other special
prizes such as SEAM Prize for dedication to contemporary repertoire; Prize of the students in musicology of the University Lumiere Lyon 2 for the best interpretation of a contemporary work; Prize for the best performance of Durosoir 2nd Quartet, 1st movement; La Belle Saison Prize of residencies and concerts; and Prize of audiences.
The quartet was also the first Korean ensemble to take first with 5 other special prizes at the 2021 Prague Spring International Music Competition.
