K-Arts' 'Twelve Lights' Exhibition Illuminates Blue House's Historic Space

A spectacular exhibition by K-Arts is currently casting its brilliance upon the historical precincts of the Blue House, the former residence and office of South Korea's presidents, aptly named the 'Blue House Special Exhibition.' Directed by Professor Choi Jongyun from the Musical Theatre Writing Program of the K-Arts School of Drama, the project team is poised to showcase enthralling music and visuals for the media facade projected on the outer wall of Blue House and the Sejong Room exhibition. Titled 'Twelve Lights,' the exhibition is scheduled to run from December 28, 2023, to January 5, 2024.

Drawing inspiration from the annals of the Blue House's history, the exhibition employs media art to articulate the struggles, frustrations, efforts, and aspirations of former Presidents who navigated the tumultuous modern history of South Korea. The musical composition filling the Sejong Room during this special exhibition zeroes in on the human imprints and values uncovered in the space, conveying them through evocative and refined music.

Renowned musical composer Professor Choi Jongyun, serving as the music director for this special exhibition, boasts an impressive portfolio, including the Musical Composition Award for productions like "Sherlock Holmes" and "Marie Curie." A pioneer in the contemporary musical scene, particularly known for works like "Gone Tomorrow," Professor Choi is at the forefront of shaping South Korea's musical landscape. In this project, he interprets the symbolic space of the Blue House with his distinctive stage grammar, preserving its unique characteristics and offering the audience a remarkable experience through musical storytelling.

Notably, the participation of Dean Lee Kangho from the K-Arts School of Music and Music Director Kim Sungsoo, globally acclaimed for his contributions to Netflix's “Squid Game,” adds further prestige to the endeavor. Dean Lee Kangho, who played the cello for the exhibition music, brings his expertise as a judge in international cello competitions, such as the Yun Isang International Cello Competition and the Penderecki International Cello Competition.

Beyond these key figures, a cadre of emerging artists from K-Arts, comprising current students and graduates, has actively contributed to the project. Playwright Jeong Hanbit, production manager Son Bong-gi, music directors Lee Dasom and Kim Jinha, project manager Lee Donghee, and string arranger Seo are among the diverse talents enriching the initiative.

This special exhibition at the Blue House was conceived with the backing of President Kim Daejin of K-Arts and the K-Arts Industry-Academy Cooperation Foundation, emphasizing the institution's commitment to innovative and community-based projects.
