 School of Music Holds an International Academic Symposium and Workshop, “Thinking Musicology Curriculum with the School of Music”


Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the School of Music, the Department of Musicology presided over the international academic symposium and workshop, “Thinking Musicology Curriculum with the School of Music,” on Friday, 6 October on the Seocho-dong campus. The event looked back on the past 30 years of the history of the Department of Musicology, drawing a vision of its future and identity. The workshop was made of research and studies by students, and the symposium of presentation of papers by professors of the School of Music and invited professors from the UK.

 

In “Looking Back on Yesterday,” a student workshop I, the participants re-oriented the topics on histories of Western music preceding the classical music era based on the individual interests, which they presented with the students in other major programs. It provided students an opportunity to study music history with various related cases. In “Thinking Music Apprentices,” a student workshop II, the classical music students shared together their thoughts and visions to discuss them.

 

At the academic symposium, Prof. Joo Sung-hye, Prof. Kim Sujin, and Prof. Sean Gregory (Vice Principal and Director of Innovation & Engagement, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, UK) presented their papers. Prof. Joo explored Lee Kang Sook, the first president of K-Arts, as a musicologist in light of her educational vision and pondered on its value and a direction to continue her teaching. Prof. Kim Sujin investigated the direction toward which the K-Arts graduate program curriculum should head with relevant case studies. Prof. Sean Gregory introduced the Guildhall School’s educational programs and activities on artists’ entrepreneurship spirit and social engagement.
