Pianist Lim Yunchan Plays with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra

Pianist Lim Yunchan, a current student of the School of Music, performed with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under the lead of conductor Michael Sanderling. Lim Yunchan is the youngest-ever winner of the Van Cliburn and a now world-renowned pianist, and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra. Their performances were presented twice, once at the Lotte Concert Hall, Seoul, on 28 June and the other time at the Seoul Arts Center on 2 July.

In these concerts whose tickets were all sold out, Lim played the “W.A. Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor.” Cadenza, the Beethoven's version he had interpreted for this performance, in particular, was acclaimed. Related to his playing, music columnist Jang Il-beom mentioned, “Lim Yunchan made Beethoven’s Cadenza sound as if it was his own, which was totally unexpected to hear as an audience. Not only did he make it special but once again demonstrate how capable he was of giving a voice through his playing.”

Pianist Rudolf Buchbinder from Austria, a maestro of our time, who was staying in South Korea for his concert schedule also enjoyed Lim’s music at the event. Buchbinder noted how he liked “March. Song of the Lark,” and “November. Troika,” from “The Seasons Op. 37a” by Tchaikovsky, the scoresx Lim Yunchan played for an encore.
