Yoon
Hyangro’s Solo Exhibition “Canvases”
From August 26th through September 27th at the Hakgojae Gallery, visual artist Yoon Hyangro, an alumna of the School of Visual Arts, hosted a solo exhibition, “Canvases.” It is her first solo exhibition after two years. Yoon has worked on transforming different images from various areas into drawings.
In this exhibition, Yoon extracts the images from a book on American abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler to tell her own experiences of being wedded, giving birth, etc. Yoon lays over her life story on the record of Frankenthaler with images. Then Yoon adds a touch of the airbrush to this overlap. The final work, therefore, takes the form of a three-layered structure. The exhibition space is also eye-catching. Yoon first created a “digital mapping image” that covers all the interior walls of the main hall of the Hakgojae Gallery. From here, she filled them with images, cutting them into hundreds of pieces.
In the end, they
are in seventeen formats and hundreds of segments that fit into the standard
sizes of canvas and screen. Overall, the floor plan of the exhibition hall is
her imaginary canvas. The spectators can enjoy the exhibition as they view
Yoon’s works while imagining her illusive world.
