Prof.
Kim Sunhee, School of Dance, Delivers Boston Ballet the Teachings of K-Ballet
From October to the next spring
semester, Professor Kim Sunhee (School of Dance), who has fostered the
excellent ballet performers who represent South Korea, delivers the Boston
Ballet the didactics of Korean ballet education. Joan Boada (an associate director
of Boston Ballet II), Kathleen Mitchell (a faculty member of Boston Ballet
School), and Miranda Weese (a faculty member of Boston Ballet School) are going
to learn from Prof. Kim.
The Boston Ballet is one of the top ballet
schools in the US together with American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and
San Francisco Ballet. Prof. Kim Sunhee said, “This opportunity is finally carried
out after Mr. Mikko Nissinen, an art director of Boston Ballet for 23 years,
has invited me for about five years. I am also in charge of coaching main
ballet dancers of repertoires to be staged 46 times at the year-end, holding classes
for young ballet dancers of Boston Ballet II, and instructing practice sessions
of classical and self-choreographed ballet works.” The Boston Ballet School is
the largest ballet education institution in North America with as many as 3,600
students, yet few among them join the Boston Ballet Company. Hence the invitation
on the school’s hand was made to adopt the Korean ballet education system aiming
to discover and train young talents to best dancers.
Prof. Kim Sunhee was appointed as the
professor of the K-Arts after having completed a teaching course at Vaganova
Academy of Mariinsky Ballet. Adopting the Vaganova Method, a ballet technique
from Russia, Prof. Kim has raised many Korean ballet dancers, including Kim
Kimin and Park Se-eun, to world-class levels.
