Kim Sunwook Is Appointed as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Gyeonggi
Provincial Philharmonic Orchestra
Alumnus of the School of Music Kim Sunwook, now a world-class pianist and conductor, was appointed to the music director and principal conductor post of the Gyeonggi Provincial Philharmonic Orchestra. His term begins in January 2024 and lasts for 2 years from then on. Starting next January with a concert celebrating the new year, Kim is expected to lead the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra over 10 times a year.
At the age of 18, while studying at K-Arts in 2006, Kim Sunwook debuted
as the youngest-ever and first Asian winner of the Leeds International Piano
Competition. Ever since he performed with world prestigious orchestras while pursuing
a 3-year master’s degree course in conducting at the Royal Academy of Music to realize
his dream to conduct.
Kim officially debuted as a conductor by guiding the KBS Symphony
Orchestra in January 2021. In October of the same year, he debuted in Europe as
well with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Kim Sunwook is actively
demonstrating his competence as a conductor by internationally leading many
orchestras. Last June, he earned praise after conducting the Gyeonggi
Philharmonic Orchestra.
